The ocean scatters stones across the beach and they stay there

for an indeterminate amount of time. As long as the seas are calm,

the stones will rest there. The next aggressive tide will pull them into

the sea or bury them in sand. The moon, the tide, the ocean, the weather

are all events beyond the control of the stones. They speckle the beach

with a carefree appearance indicating their acceptance

of what they cannot change.

A lone rock with sails of snow set out on a journey one day.

It came upon wondrous new surroundings

even though it stood still in its travels,

 for the cloud-patterned sky, scents on the wind,

a flash of birds and fish, and the determined tide

all passed closely by.

Tide Time

A shoreline rock is being swallowed whole by the steady push of the tide;

an advancing line of water bending over itself as it rises up the side of

the boulder. Time passes in a variety of ways, a variety of speeds.

The edge of tidal water is one measure – one cog in a universal

timepiece – that truly metes out our time here on Earth.
